HI there, I finally got my vespa 50 to a stage where I could try to start it, but...
I have a clutch problem and I think it is the reason for a few other problems. I hope someone can help.
The scoot is a simple Vespa V50N.
Firstly the kickstarter is slipping. It grips sometimes but if I do it do hard it slips. It almost started it yesterday wit a few kicks but not quite.
Secondly, my clutch doesnt seem to be doing anything. Whilst standing still no engine running, I can change from neutral to first without the clutch. When I pull the clutch in I am presuming that the back wheel can free wheel like it is in neutral, but it doesnt, it is like it is in gear?
ANd then finally, when I do get it started by jump starting it into second, if I try to put it in neutral it stalls on me.
Anh help with any of the above would be fantastic
Thanks
Matt
Clutch problem
Firstly - have you checked the clutch handle for proper action (2-3mm of free play, then at about 50-60% of full action/handle movement there should be a noticeable resistance when the clutch spring compresses), and seen the clutch lever (underneath the engine) move about 2cm?
If the lever movement is too small (or the cable is badly adjusted) your clutch will either drag (not disengage properly) or slip (not engage properly).
If your clutch cable is nicked or frayed, you won´t get the full action from the handle transferred to the lever, as the cable itself will compress (nicked cable or bad cable insulation) or take up some movement/inhibit part of the movement (frayed cable inside the insulation). At the lever, all the important action takes place within about one cm of movement...so everything has to be right for it to work.
Start by checking your clutch as per above.
Then, make sure there is no slack in the cable.
(You might have a clutch that is "glued up" from years of non-use, but that´s a different story, check the above first)
Others will chime in here too, I am sure. Good luck!

Hi there,
thanks for the reply and the help. All the cables are brand new as I replaced them the other day
I will have to double check to see how much movement I am getting out of the clutch arm, although I think it is quite a bit.
Just to be sure, to fit the clutch cable i have pushed the clutch arm in as far as it goes by hand and then tightened it there.
Its a bit of a strange one.
Cheers

OK. Now, make sure that the metal cap at end of the clutch insulation rests against the slotted bit of metal inside the handlebar - if not, the handle will not pull at the cable properly = no action at the lever. The cable should run in the slot, and the end bit must be behind the slot at all times.
Pull the handle all the way, then use a flashlight to get a peek inside - from the handle perspective. If the cable end is secure behind the slot, you will barely see a hint of metal cap behind the slot, and the cable will go into the slot. If it´s not secure, you will notice it - the cable will be outside the slot, and the metal cap and a bit of plastic insulation will be visible.
If the cable insulation has slipped out of the slot you will need to loosen the screw nipple (!) at the lever, and reposition the insulation before you proceed. Just make sure it is properly seated before you assemble the cable & nipple again. Also, while you are at it, put the clutch cable adjuster (8mm) all the way in. Then take up all slack, tighten the nipple and try again.
Hopefully you understand my explanation.
